Many types of financial aid are available to fund your education

Most financial aid is awarded based on need and family financial circumstances, but loans are available to students from all financial backgrounds. Financial aid is available for U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other eligible non-citizens who are enrolled at least half-time in an undergraduate program that leads to a degree or certificate. International students who are in the country temporarily are not eligible for assistance.

Grants

Grants are awarded based on financial need and do not have to be repaid. The federal government provides funds for some grants (Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant, and Federal SMART Grant). Your financial aid package will include grants when permitted by federal or state regulations, UC Riverside awarding policies, and available funding levels.

Scholarships

Scholarships, which do not have to be repaid, are generally awarded to students based on merit, special talents and/or need. New students apply for scholarships through the University of California Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships, which is filed during the month of November. L

Loans

Loans, which are included in most financial aid packages, require repayment. With a loan you can defer the cost of your educational expenses by borrowing now and repaying after graduation. Loans available through the UC Riverside Financial Aid Office have interest rates that range from less than 5 percent to 9 percent. The federal government pays the interest on subsidized loans while you are enrolled at least half-time. You are responsible for paying the interest on unsubsidized loans while you are enrolled. Stafford Loans range from $3,500 per year for freshmen to $5,500 for juniors and seniors.painter

Work-Study

Federal Work-Study provides an opportunity for on- and off-campus employment for currently enrolled students. Federal Work-Study is awarded to students based on financial need and the availability of funds. Non-work-study jobs are also available. Students establish their work schedules with their employers. A listing of work opportunities is available through the UC Riverside Career Center Web site.

Other Resources

Other sources of financial aid include scholarships from outside donors, academic departments, the military, and private organizations. For information, consult your high school or community college counselor or school library.
Deferred Payment Plan
The Deferred Payment Plan (DPP) is designed to give students an opportunity to pay their fees and tuition over an extended period of time. There is an application fee for participation. Information is available at the Student Business Services Web site.
